'Votes' (2021)

Video/Film made on Premier Pro

19:6

Nicola Santon is a British artist, living and practicing in Birmingham. She has always had an interest in art and using it as a way to express views and emotions of that surrounding her. She creates primarily videography, photography and digital work- but is not limited to these mediums.

She has recently responded to the circumstances created by living in a pandemic, by curating using digital methods – a reliable and accessible medium available consistently. She works to provoke emotion and recognition within her work for the things that often get overlooked. Some of her more recent works can be portrayed as playful but descriptive – following historical and current patterns in society to inform and inspire creativeness of the work. Societal factors play a huge part in her work as she aims to portray the world as she sees it. She is currently working towards the inclusion of others views of the world and how to portray these in her own practice.

Her favourite piece of work to date is the 'Votes' animation video she created as part of S&S Collision. One of the first animation series’ they drew, the theme of feminism and the history behind it has always interested her, so creating the drawings to represent that was really enjoyable. The research to create this piece was in much depth, giving her endless ideas of how to portray the subject. Nicola loved the challenge of having to come to a final idea and experimenting with different drawings, colours, and sizes. The first digital drawing she created inspired her to continue taking this route within her practice and gave her the feeling of knowing this was a way of expressing herself that she resided with. Nicola believes this was the crucial moment in her personal development that lead her to collaboration, as Ishe was determined to see these drawings come to life.

Nicola's artwork has been included in many exhibitions, multiple located in Birmingham School of Art, 'What Matters Most'(2018), and 'Hyperstew' (2019) her biggest exhibition so far at Centrala Birmingham, UK.
